About

Deborah Day & RockyCalifornia artist Deborah Day is a horse woman, nature enthusiast, and passionate painter. Much of her inspiration comes from outside her back door where she has a menagerie of about thirty horses, several dogs (from mutts to mastiffs), a few peripatetic peacocks, and one three-legged cat. Her beloved quarter horse Rocky works as model for paintings, a snub horse for colts and a maned mayor for this dusty oasis where kids of all ages learn to ride and enjoy free barnyard entertainment: chickens chasing cats, cats jumping on horses and the high jinks of a granddaughter who learned how to open gates about the same time she learned to walk. When the dust settles, Deborah hopes that enough of it sticks to her canvases to capture life as she sees it.

Deborah graduated with honors from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona with an art major and animal science minor. She has since built a dual career as horse trainer and artist. For several years she worked in the equine program at a local community college. Now she primarily works out of her own facility, the Rockin D Ranch in Bloomington. She is also enrolled in the nursing program at Cal State San Bernardino. After years of training headstrong horses, she is looking forward to giving medical care instead of receiving it and helping others heal while continuing to paint and sculpt. Outside of the domestic and educational realms, Deborah loves to travel and some of her work depicts her experience from western Wyoming to the African savanna.

Deborah has received various awards for her work, including “People’s Choice” award from the Cow Palace Grand National Art Show for “Bridle Horse”. Her work is featured in Ga Wa Ni Pony Boy’s book, “Of Women and Horses.”
